Cleveland Metropolitan School District Responsible Sexual Behavior Curriculum Delivery
In 2002 The Cleveland Metropolitan School District adopted the Comprehensive Health Plan, complete with goals and objectives designed to improve the overall health and wellbeing of staff and students. One of the critical health indicators in that plan is Responsible Sexual Behavior. Four main goals were drafted to serve as flagships to creating sexually healthy and responsible students. GOALS:
In June of 2006, the District was approached by Mayor Frank G. Jackson, with an opportunity to fill gaps in comprehensive sexuality education, allowing the District to go to scale with programming for every K-12 student. MISSION Provide comprehensive health education regarding sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy prevention, responsible decision-making and related areas to all CMSD students, from kindergarten through 12th grade. This program should be a groundbreaking county/city and public/private partnership. We propose to expand on existing programs and create or locate new curricula for the grades not currently covered, with the objective being to cover all students in all grades with a program of medically accurate health education of sufficient "dosage" to positively impact behavior. All chosen curricula would be evidence-based and consistent throughout a student's K-12 experience. SUPPORT This initiative is supported by Mayor Frank G. Jackson, Cuyahoga County Commissioners Timothy Hagan, Peter Lawson Jones, and James Dimora. Funding for the 2006-07 grant year is provided by The Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the Cleveland Department of Public Health. PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION Responsible Sexual Behavior curriculum will by CMSD Health Services Adolescent Liaisons, and the following community partners; Murtis Taylor Multi-Service Center, May Dugan Center, Hispanic UMADAOP, Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland, AGAPE, and Beechbrook.
