Special Olympics is the world's largest program of athletic training and competition for individuals with mental retardation.  Since its inception in 1968, the program has grown to more than 1,000,000 athletes and 500,000 volunteers in more than 140 countries around the globe.  Created by the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation, Special Olympics International, the parent organization, is based in Washington, DC.  The founding chairman of Special Olympics is Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
