Professional Development

 

Intervention specialists may become highly qualified by completing 90 CLOCK hours of professional development (PD) for each core content area they teach. To meet the federal HQT definition, up to 45 CLOCK hours may be in pedagogy, while a minimum of 45 CLOCK hours MUST be in the core content area being taught (see illustration at right).

The following represents a list of ODE-sponsored activities that teachers may choose from related to the academic subject area being taught.

Mathematics This PD Activity =
Participate in an Ohio Department of Education sponsored Ohio Mathematics Academy Program (OMAP) professional development course.

schedule and register.
Upon successful completion of one OMAP course, you will meet one-half (45 clock hours) of the qualification to meet the requirements of a highly qualified teacher in mathematics. Two OMAP courses will meet the required 90 clock hours of professional development in mathematics.
Participate in OMAP online as a professional development activity by accessing http://www.osn.state.oh.us/go/elearning. You will need to complete three modules in mathematics to be highly qualified. You also may participate in the Standards-Based Education online course and two OMAP modules to meet the highly qualified requirement.
Science This PD Activity =
Participate in an Ohio Department of Education sponsored Ohio Science Institute (OSCI) professional development course. Access http://w to review the schedule and register. Upon successful completion of one OSCI course, you will meet one-half (45 clock hours) of the qualification to meet the requirements of a highly qualified teacher in science. Two OSCI courses will meet the required 90 clock hours of professional development in science.
Participate in OSCI online as a professional development activity by assessing http://www.osn.state.oh.us/go/elearning. You will need to complete three modules in science to be highly qualifies. Social Studies

This PD Activity =

Upon successful completion of one SSIO course, you will meet one-half (45 clock hours) of the qualification to meet the requirements of a highly qualified teacher in social studies. Two SSIO courses will meet the required 90 clock hours of professional development in social studies.
Note. There is a limited availability for SSl0. If teachers find this option is unavailable, they can seek other options through local or higher education opportunities.
Participate in an Ohio Department of Education sponsored Social Studies Institute of Ohio (SSIO) professional development course.

Reading

This PD Activity =

Participate in an Ohio Department of Education sponsored State Institute of Reading Intervention (SIRI) as a professional development activity. Access http://www.ode.state.oh.us/reading_improvement/SIRI/default.
asp to periodically review SIRI schedules and register for a SIRI activity.
Upon successful completion of  SIRI, you will be highly qualified in reading.

English Language Arts

This PD Activity =

English: Writing Standards 7-12
This PD activity for educators teaching in middle and high school environments will be piloted in June 2005. The focus of this writing work shop is designed around the English Language arts academic content standards: Writing Processes, Writing Applications and Writing Conventions.
You will receive 45 hours (five days plus two days imbedded in the school year) upon completion of this course.
Training in Adolescent Literacy (see SIRI)
ODE has launched its third edition of SIRI for middle, junior and high school teachers.
This professional development is available year-round and consists of eight sessions for 25 hours of total training, offered after school or on weekends, depending upon the region.
