A Message from
Board of Education Chair, Robert Heard

Having assumed the office
of Board of Education Chair on July 2, 2007, I am able to reflect back on
the successes of last school year, and look forward to the promise of this
current school year.
Last school year under the bold new leadership of new Chief
Executive Officer Dr. Eugene Sanders, our students’ much improved academic
performance resulted in Cleveland achieving the rank of Continuous
Improvement on the State report card for the first time. Our District also
successfully negotiated new labor agreements with our teachers union, and
many of our other employee unions.
This school
year our new K-8 school uniform and high school dress code policy is taking
effect, which we believe will have a positive impact on our school
environment.
Our Board is also proud to open a number of new and renovated
school buildings this school year. Thanks to the voters support of the Issue
14 bond issue in 2001, we continue to make progress on our capital
improvement plan, with the opening of the newly-constructed Daniel E. Morgan
K-8 School, Miles Park K-8 School and Warner Academy for Girls, and with the
reopening of the newly- renovated Franklin D. Roosevelt K-8 School. These
openings are another important step toward providing world class educational
facilities for all of our students.
This year we are also opening new Opportunity Schools of
Choice. Kenneth W.
Clement School and Valley View School have reopened as PreK-2 academies for
boys, along with the reopened Douglas MacArthur School and the
newly-constructed Warner School serving as PreK-2 academies for girls. The
Ginn Academy, named after Glenville High School coach Ted Ginn, Sr., whose
inspirational leadership has led to the creation of this school, has opened
in the former Health
Careers
Center
building, serving at-risk male high school students.
As the new Board of Education Chair, I am fortunate to work
with a dedicated, volunteer Board, made up of veteran members Louise
Dempsey, Rashidah Abdulhaqq, Grady Burrows, Larry Davis, Willetta Milam and
Flor Gomez, along with our newest members Natalie Peterson and Denise Link.
Working closely with Dr. Sanders and Mayor Frank Jackson, we are committed
to the goal of making the
Cleveland Metropolitan
School District a premier school district in the
United States of America.
With the continued support of parents, students, teachers, staff and the
community we will no doubt achieve that goal.
