A Message From Dr. Eugene T.W. Sanders

CEO, Cleveland Metropolitan School District

Safety and Security Plan Press Conference

~ March 11, 2008

Dr. Eugene T. W. Sanders

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is currently engaged in a multi-level strategy to provide what we deem “a bubble of safety” in and around our school buildings.  Our goal is to create a safe learning environment for our students and secure teaching setting for staff.

Magnetometers or (metal detectors) have been installed in every high school and installation has begun in selected K-8 school buildings.  Some high schools will be equipped with X-ray machines in addition to metal detectors.  Based on security data collected daily by the District, X-ray machines may also be configured in some of our K-8 buildings.

I am also pleased to announce that CMSD has partnered with several law enforcement agencies that share our interest in keeping our students safe, they include: Cleveland Police Department, Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority, Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department, Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, U.S. Attorney, U.S. Marshal and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The goal of creating a safe environment for our students is paramount.  To date, reports of serious incidents in our schools are down, assaults are down, graduation rates are up and the State rating of “Continuous Improvement” keeps our staff energized toward greater success.

I invite the community to provide me with feedback (Talk to the CEO link) and suggestions on what CMSD can do to enhance the learning experience for our students.

We are all in this together!

Sincerely,

Eugene T.W. Sanders, Ph.D.
