HOW ARE STUDENTS ASSIGNED TO SCHOOLS?
Students are assigned to schools based on the address of the parent/legal guardian. A designated set of addresses/streets (attendance areas/residential zones) belongs to each district school. This school is considered the “home” school for that set of addresses.
The student’s grade and academic program (regular education, special education, multilingual education, and thematic/optional) also determine the assignment. Sometimes a student has programmatic needs that cannot be met at the home school.
The assigned (home) school is not always the closest school to the home. Boundaries are based on distance and building capacity. A school may not have enough seats to accommodate all of the students who live closest to that building.
The District tries to avoid situations where students walk past natural or man-made obstructions such as creeks or freeways. Staff also tries to avoid having students walk past one building to get to another.
WHY WAS MY CHILD MOVED TO ANOTHER SCHOOL?
This year students were moved to different schools for several reasons:
Three schools/programs have moved to swing sites this year as part of the District’s capital improvements program. Students assigned to George W. Carver will be attending school at the Alfred Benesch swing site. Students assigned to Nathan Hale will be attending school at the Mount Pleasant swing site. And, students assigned to the Genesis Program will be attending school at the Option Complex at Margaret Ireland.
Many students who were attending schools outside their neighborhoods were reassigned to their home schools.
In addition, the child’s school may have changed due to placement in or removal from a special program (special education, multilingual education, gifted program, or thematic/optional).
I DID NOT RECEIVE A LETTER. WHERE IS MY CHILD ASSIGNED?
Final assignment letters have been mailed to the parents of all students in the District. Parents may not have received letters if there is a new address. Parents should take proof of the new address to the child’s school.
HOW DO I CHANGE MY ADDRESS?
The parent or legal guardian may take proof of a new address to the child’s assigned school. Documents may include a utility bill, pay stub, or lease agreement.
HOW DO I WITHDRAW MY CHILD?
Parents must go to the child’s assigned school to withdraw. The parent/guardian must show a photo ID and provide the name of the new school/new city where the child will be enrolled.
HOW CAN I ENROLL A STUDENT?
Parents may enroll students in regular education classes at any District neighborhood school. Parents must present the student’s immunization records, birth certificate and proof of address. Guardianship information should be provided if applicable. Social security numbers are not required. Children must be 5 years old by September 30th in order to be eligible for kindergarten.
Students with special needs (IEPs) must be enrolled by the Special Education Office, 1440 Lakeside Avenue. This includes any prekindergarten students with special needs.
Any student who speaks a language other than English or is in a home where a language other than English is spoken must be enrolled by the Multilingual/Multicultural Office. Their office is located at 3101 W. 25th St.
Parents who wish to enroll children in the District’s Prekindergarten classes must contact staff at the requested school or contact the Early Childhood Office.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR AN OPEN ENROLLMENT TRANSFER?
Parents may apply for Intradistrict Open Enrollment Transfers (K-12) to any neighborhood schools other than the assigned school. Requests will be granted if space is available at the requested school and grade level and if any required special educational and/or language services are available. Transportation will not be available. Download Forms from the Web here or get them at all schools.
Parents who live outside the boundaries of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District also may apply for transfers (Interdistrict Open Enrollment Transfers, K-12) These requests also will be granted if space is available. Parents will not be charged tuition. Transportation will not be available and requests must be submitted within 10 days of the beginning of the school year.
