WHEREAS, Cleveland, like most other major cities, is plagued with high
dropout rates, low graduation rates, low scores on achievement tests, and poor attendance;
and
WHEREAS, Lack of parent involvement in children's lives and their
education significantly affects the well-being of our children; and
WHEREAS, Parental participation in their children's learning is a key
factor in ensuring the educational success of our children; and
WHEREAS, there is a need for both personal responsibility and unified
political and community action to make sure that a "whole village" does educate
the child;
THEREFORE, in order to improve the education of my child(ren) and
indeed of all children, I commit in spirit, principle and action to the following:
- I will require 1-1/2 hours of homework a night from my child.
- I will check my child's homework.
- I will allow no TV during study time and will promote reading as an alternative.
- I will require daily attendance of my child.
- I will require a reasonable bedtime hour on school nights.
- I will attend my child's school at least once a month and work closely with teachers.
- I will provide an educational activity for my child at least once a month.
- I will become involved with teachers, administrators, and community groups seeking to
increase the amount of resources for student success and support of public education.
I also hereby pledge that to the best of my ability, I shall pursue all possible
courses of action to increase my own participation and that of other parents in the
well-being of our children's lives and education.
