Magen Greer, a student advocate, youth leader, and stellar scholar and athlete at East Technical High School, was the recipient of the “I Am EMPOWERED” Award for her commitment to service at the National Urban League’s 54th Equal Opportunity Day awards dinner.

Magen, her father Fazular Rahmon, and Danyll Lockhart, education and youth director for the Urban League of Greater Cleveland, accepted the award in New York City.

Community service

Magen is committed to community service. She volunteers after school twice a week at her local community center, providing safe and structured activities for younger children.

Earlier this year, Magen was selected to be a youth ambassador for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District based on her strong communication and interpersonal skills. As an ambassador, she’s charged with maintaining a stable and positive school atmosphere amidst fears of school violence.

Aside from excelling in softball, volleyball, basketball, and track, Magen is a member of the National Honor Society, maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 4.03. She is a strong contender for valedictorian of the graduating class of 2011.

Magen plans to continue giving back to her community by establishing community athletic teams and coaching youths.

She credits the Urban League of Greater Cleveland’s Project Ready program for getting her ready for life outside of her community. She thanks the program and it’s staff for supporting her strong belief in education.

Project Ready

The Urban League’s flagship education program, Project Ready-Career Beginnings, is a high school retention and college access program that’s designed to make Cleveland Metropolitan School District more competitive in the global economy. The success has been phenomenal. Results have included increased school attendance, an increased interest and commitment to learning, and improved social skills.

Through a new AT&T Aspire grant, the program has expanded. The program works with 60 young ladies in the 10th grade at Glenville High School, giving them the additional support, resources, and exposure to broaden their horizon. The program centers around academic support, personal development, and cultural and global awareness.

United Way of Greater Cleveland funds Project Ready students at Collinwood, East Tech, and Ginn Academy.

The Project Ready curriculum for 9th and 10th graders is provided by the National Urban League. It has been successfully integrated with Career Beginnings for 11th and 12th graders, a program that has been in existence for over 23 years.

The Urban League of Greater Cleveland

Since opening its doors in 1917, the Urban League of Greater Cleveland has been an advocate and champion for those living on the social margins. Job training, job placement, education and youth development, and small business development are among the flagship programs that have helped thousands of Greater Clevelanders make positive steps to improve their lives.
