6/1/2011 6:00:00 AMBaron Davis to throw 1st pitch Thursday, CMSD's B.R.I.C.K. students to watch from suite

June 1, 2011

Zac Jackson, Fox Sports Ohio

Baron Davis is working with the B.R.I.C.K. Cleveland Cavaliers guard Baron Davis will throw out the ceremonial first pitch Thursday night prior to the Cleveland Indians game vs. the Texas Rangers.

Davis will also host 18 boys (ages 13-17) from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s B.R.I.C.K. (Brotherhood, Respect, Intelligence, Conduct, Knowledge) program in a suite at Progressive Field that evening.

The mission of the B.R.I.C.K. program is to save lives in the inner-city by teaching young men how to think critically and solve problems through respecting self, others and the environment, while creating a healthy long-term support system.

In addition to furthering the cause, Davis’ appearance furthers a string of cross-promotion amongst Cleveland’s professional sports franchises. Browns defensive back Joe Haden showed up at a handful of Cavaliers games last winter in full uniform – once dressed as Davis – and Haden, Browns teammate Joshua Cribbs and former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar were part of the Cavaliers traveling party at last month’s NBA Draft Lottery. Haden, Cribbs and Colt McCoy were also spotted in a suite at a handful of Indians games last month.

Each of the boys attending the game through the B.R.I.C.K. program has been asked to write an essay on one goal they’ve set for themselves and how they plan to go about achieving it.  Davis will read all of the essays and select one winner to take the mound and throw the first pitch alongside him.
