A Message From Dr. Eugene T.W. Sanders

CEO, Cleveland Metropolitan School District

Dr. Eugene T. W. Sanders

November 15, 2007

Dear Parents and Staff:

Since the tragedy at Success Tech Academy, October 10, 2007, my office has been working to review the security procedures in place in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.  Our goal is to ensure that every student, employee, and visitor feels welcome and safe when visiting our facilities.

I am pleased to announce that a team of security experts arrived in Cleveland this week to begin an intensive safety audit.  The assessment will be conducted by member organizations of the Council of Great City Schools (their website is www.cgcs.org).  The charge of the security team will be to interview critical staff, review policies and procedures, and submit recommendations on how CMSD can enhance the current safety operations.  I believe this process will ultimately provide our District with information that will enable us to become “premier” in the areas of safety and security.

The review will take several months to complete. The team of experts will make multiple visits to Cleveland, and utilize all available resources to deliver a comprehensive report to the CEO.  I have asked the committee to transmit the report to my office before the end of the school year.  I will share the recommendations with the Mayor, the Board of Education, and the CMSD community.

Furthermore, the District has sought the assistance of a California-based, non profit agency, regarded as one of the largest behavioral and social science research organizations in the world. Our goal is to engage this agency to further assist CMSD in identifying the emotional needs of our children.

Academically, CMSD has been provided with access to the results of the 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress in reading and mathematics.  I am pleased with the results because the information reflects the hard work of our staff and students to make significant improvements.

Please continue to support the children who attend our schools, and we will continue our efforts to keep you informed.  Parents are encouraged to contact the campus administrator for information of school-related projects and individual student progress.  As always, I invite your feedback. To contact the CEO, please log on to the CMSD website (www.cmsdnet.net) and follow the instructions to “Talk to the CEO.”  The primary goal of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District is to become a premier school district in the United States of America

I hope that you have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

Sincerely,

Eugene T.W. Sanders, Ph.D.
