RECOMMENDATIONS
Athletic Academic Advisors:
Each school will identify an athletic academic advisor. This advisor should be someone other than the coach or the athletic director. The advisor would identify student-participates who are under-achieving and provide the following: regular monitoring of weekly eligibility cards, establish tutors in the following areas: 1) math 2) science 3) English; and 4) social studies, establish a time and a place for study session, assist in improving study skills and maintain attendance.
The athletic academic advisor would make recommendation for additional tutoring. Information is then sent to student participant’s head coach or sponsor.
Study Session:
All students-athletes achieving a 2.0 G.P.A., or less, or “D” or “F” on their weekly eligibility card are required to attend study session. The study session will be 45 to 60 minutes in duration with a minimum of three sessions per week, during the regular school day on the student-athletes free period.
Study Session Attendance Requirement:
- Any student-participate, identified as having difficulty, must attend the study session until the next report card grade.
- Going to the library, unsupervised, is not considered attending the study session.
- Disciplinary dismissal from a supervised study session is considered an unexcused absence.
- Coaches may require student-participate, other than those defined above, to attend study session.
Excused Abuses:
- Family emergency or parent/guardian request.
- Other reason to be considered by athletic advisor.
Note: Coaches/sponsors do not have the authority to excuse student-athletes from any portion of the three-session study requirement.
Any student-participate that fails to meet this three-session minimum study requirement is subject to any or all the following sanctions:
- Suspension from practice.
- Suspension from competitions.
- Dismissal from the team.
Consequences:
- 1st - Unexcused Absence: WRITTEN REPRIMAND
- 2nd - Unexcused Absence: SUSPENDED FROM PRACTICE
