Orthopedically Handicapped (OH)
Students with congenital or acquired physical disabilities or health impairments are served by the Orthopedically Handicapped Program. Orthopedic impairment means a severe orthopedic impairment that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. The term includes impairments caused by a congenital anomaly, impairments caused by disease e.g., poliomyelitis, bone tuberculosis, and impairments from other causes e.g., cerebral palsy, amputations and fractures or burns that cause contractures.
Some Identifying Characteristics are:
- Inability to move about without assistance; non-ambulatory
- Requires adaptive therapeutic equipment/educational program
- Requires help with toileting, eating, dressing, medication
- Lacks general control of body movements, incontinent, non-verbal
- Unable to travel independently to school, needs sheltered environment
A non-graded, continuous educational program is developed in accordance with the results of a multi-factored evaluation. Certified teachers, teacher assistants, and therapists augment regular instruction and provide support services. Students are enrolled in regular academic classes and specialized classes where appropriate, in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Equipment and devices to aid ambulation are employed, along with adaptive therapeutic equipment, in the educational program of these students.
Speech/Language Pathologists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, and teacher assistants provide support services for students with a variety of health needs. In addition, medical consultation is encouraged on a continuing basis.
