Science Education

All students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District will have a rigorous inquiry standards-based science curriculum focused on literacy and math connections administered by qualified committed teachers in a safe laboratory environment where teachers hold themselves responsible and accountable for their students’ success. The Standards are aligned with the Ohio Department of Education’s Science Content Standards.

There are six general Pre-K-12 Standards in the following areas: (1) Earth and Space Science; (2) Life Sciences; (3) Physical Sciences; (4) Science and Technology; (5) Scientific Inquiry; and (6) Scientific Ways of Knowing. Each standard has specific Benchmarks for each grade level.  The Benchmarks are followed by Organizers that identify the main scientific area or concept addressed in the Standards. The Organizers are followed by specific grade level Performance Indicators. This allows teachers to identify what students are expected to know and understand at each grade level

Acknowledgements for direction and assistance in the development of the Science Standards go to Mrs.Barbara Byrd-Bennett, Chief Executive Officer; Dr. Myrna Elliott-Lewis, Chief Academic Officer; Mr. William Badders, Director of Mathematics and Science Systemic Reform; and Mr. Gary Nickerson, Science Manager.

Special recognition is given to the following teachers for their dedication and commitment to the development and writing of the standard: Matthew Teare, Bonniejean Meyer, Kevin Peacock, Roy Woda, Marva Russell, Monica Reese, Paul Lockhart, Ramona Sancho, Jane Donovan, Ed Hohertz, Mike Musgrave, Beverly Tatum, Rowenna Ricketts, Letty Maxwell, Rochelle Solomon, Sandy Ammon, Tina Carter, Terri Lyles, Paulette Overton, and Esther Hopkins-Garfield.
